The co-founders of Instagram have quit and become the latest high-profile employees to step down from the helm of Facebook-owned companies.

Kevin Systrom, chief executive and Mike Krieger, chief technical officer, plan to leave the company in the next few weeks and take time off ‘to explore our curiosity and creativity again’.

The man who launched Whatsapp also resigned earlier this year amid a growing backlash against the crisis-hit social network.

Unconfirmed rumours suggested that the Instagram founders were getting tired of working with Mark Zuckerberg, who allegedly is taking more of an involvement in running the popular picture app as users desert Facebook.

However, Zuck was complimentary about Systrom and Krieger, who he called ‘extraordinary product leaders’ and said he was looking forward ‘to seeing what they build next’.
